Do corporations have the same religious liberties as natural people? David Gans of the Constitutional Accountability Center and the CATO Institute’s Ilya Shapiro joined Jeffrey Rosen for a detailed discussion about a hot constitutional issue.

St_etheldredas_church_stainedglassThe National Constitution Center’s Town Hall Tuesday discussion on December 10, 2013 started with a debate about claims that corporations with religious objections to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, can claim exceptions from offering health insurance to employees that include birth-control measures.

Later in this one-hour discussion, our experts addressed a wide range of issues relating to the concept of corporations having personal rights, from the Supreme Court’s controversial 2012 Citizens United case, to the tricky questions of applying the Founding Fathers’ logic to a corporate structure that didn’t exist in 1787.

Our audience also had some thought-proving questions about an issue that will be one of the major Supreme Court decisions announced in June 2014.
